Absolutely!  It is very common for patients to undertake a normal health screen to exclude serious medical conditions and have standard blood tests and then use a functional medicine approach to improve and optimise their health. This sometimes involves additional scientific testing for gut health or for hormone or biomarker blood tests such as FDX. More information around these additional tests can be found in the information links on this page.

Functional medicine can be very suitable for conditions that relate to inflammation and more fundamental body systems good examples include:

  • Digestive problems
  • Human issues such as menopause polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Skin issues such as eczema
  • Mental health problems
  • Thyroid disease
  • Fatigue and burnout
Before you undertake a functional medicine appointment we send you a very detailed questionnaire which will cover many aspects of your lifestyle nutrition exercise and sleep concerns. At your appointment you will have a very detailed history taken and physical examination. Access to advanced functional testing and interpretation allows insight into the root causes of chronic illness and allows our doctors to create a tailored plan and also to track the progress of any health advice or treatment.
Sometimes more advanced testing may be recommended to delve deeper into the root cause of medical complaints or to help provide a better understanding of the systems within your body and what factors may be stopping you from achieving optimum health. We partner with three main laboratories to provide comprehensive, advanced functional testing:
Our accredited testing partner, FunctionalDX, provides blood testing and health reports which go beyond traditional blood analysis to reveal more about your health picture. In testing they apply up to 120 blood biomarkers and use predictive algorithims to help understand your future risk of disease and to allow us to understand and offer you the most effective therapy options. Their sophisticated AI reporting algorithm analyses 13 body systems, 7 accessory systems, 7 macro systems and the status of 14 nutrients to provide the most advanced, comprehensive reporting on the market today. As an approved FunctionalDX partner, your Shilpa Dave Health practitioner will be able to guide you through a programme to restore and encourage optimal health. Genova diagnostics comprehensive stool test is an advanced test that provides information around your gut health and offers valuable insight into inflammation and the intestinal microbiome which is the bacteria and parasites that colonise the gut system. DUTCH Hormone testing for some patients see those with fatigue syndromes or menopause issues a more detailed hormone analysis can be undertaken this is known as the DUTCH Hormone test.

We screen you for important health conditions around cancer prevention, heart disease, womens and mens health.
We look at your work and home routines alongside your exercise and movement. We help you identify areas to improve your physical activity and look at what factors may be stopping you from achieving your physical goals such as time, motivation, stress and diet.
We explore the underlying triggers and root causes of poor health. By looking at your work, stress and sleep hygiene we give you the tools, detailed advice and support to help you improve in these key areas.

As well as taking standard measurements such as BMI, our comprehensive body composition analysis allows you to understand your baseline %body fat, bone and muscle mass, to help you build health goals which are tailored to you.  We also include an ECG as well as a cervical smear for female patients.

Many patients want a simple suite of blood tests to screen for common conditions, others need or prefer more in depth analysis for example vitamin and mineral analysis. For some patients specific health concerns might drive more complex testing such as:

  • Detailed hormone analysis for the menopause
  • FDX biomarker blood testing
  • Genova Diagnostic stool testing
  • DUTCH hormone testing
  • Allergy testing
  • DATAR clinical genetics liquid biopsy (in association with cancer specialist)

If we identify a serious medical condition we will treat it immediately or refer you quickly to one of our preferred specialists. Common referrals include, breast, gynaecology, dermatology, cardiology and gastroenterology.

We work closely with local specialists and with centres of excellence such as the Cromwell Hospital, where more specialised tests or expertise can be offered if needed.

We complete your health screen by working with you to highlight priorities for your health and then, if you wish, we will also help you agree and set personal health goals. Some patients may want to engage with personal training while others take up yoga or breathing and mindfulness sessions.  Others embark on a functional medicine journey working with our Nutritional Therapists to address key health concerns. Examples of conditions where a Functional Medicine approach is considered include:

  • Food intolerances and digestive problems
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Menopause
  • Skin problems
  • Mental health issues
  • Fatigue and burnout

All health screens include a 30 minute follow up appointment where we go through your results with you to create a bespoke plan and provide a report tailored to your personal health needs.

Choose a date and time that suits you and book online and pay for your health screen. The cost includes both initial and follow up consultation The health screen is 60 minutes and includes an additional 30 minute follow up consultation usually 1-4 weeks after the health screen depending on the tests taken). Allow some time to complete your online questionnaire thoroughly.
The online questionnaire covers all areas of your health and will allow your Doctor to have a good understanding of your health concerns before the health screening appointment.
Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and wait to be called into the surgery. You will be asked to provide a urine specimen so drink plenty of water before you arrive as well. We usually ask patients to arrive having fasted from 10pm the night before so we can perform accurate blood tests, so bring a snack with you so you can eat straight after your blood tests. Most patients will have blood tests straight way, but patients undertaking FDX biomarker blood testing may be asked to book in for a dedicated appointment as the blood testing process is more complicated (we have to centrifuge and process the sample prior to courier collection). You will be given a range of options depending on the health screen findings and we book your follow up appointment to discuss your test results.

At the follow up appointment many patients simply are reassured and discharged. For some patients who tests reveal medical conditions we may recommend further tests.

A good example of this is the Cardioscan myPatch remote Holter device. More information about the myPatch device can be found here. Some patients will need referral to a specialist, and we may make suggestions for more detailed testing (such as gut testing). Our platinum health screens include a 60 minute appointment to review the results of your FDX biomarker panel blood tests. The FDX test results and comprehensive report usually take 3 weeks to come back as the report is very detailed.

Some will choose to use our wellness team to pursue their health goals and improve their overall health and you can book appointments for personal training, Yoga or Nutritional therapy once your health screen results have been discussed with you.

For some patients with chronic or ongoing health concerns follow up will be recommended to support you and some patients use a Functional Medicine approach to optimise their health at this stage . This could include wearable health technology. More information about the Functional Medicine approach can be found in the Functional Medicine section of our website.

Your results will be sent to you via secure email.

Yes but this may not be possible for all medicines as our doctors follow the guidance for doctors from the General Medical Council (GMC). Some medicines are controlled drugs and require us to use specialised prescriptions processes.
This is due to safeguarding and the need to be able to examine children fully.
Please email pa@privategp.org and we will contact you to arrange this.
Appointments are strictly timed as we are trying to help as many patients as possible during this time of limited access to doctors. If your appointment overruns you may be cut off and may be charged for the additional time.
